LESLIE HAMILTON ART

The extent of my work is a product of my curiosity about the world I have lived in. From the place where I grew up to the places I've visited and the people I've encountered, I have always been conscious of my environment and my place in it. My mother was an artist and my first teacher. She taught me to observe and to draw what I saw as well as what I felt. I always have art materials and a camera with me. If it is fascinating subject matter, just the right light cast on a face or a distant scene, I sketch it immediately or photograph it, as scrap stock, to use in a later project.

Years of working in advertising, on projects dictated by creative directors, art directors and private clients taught me to listen. I developed and realized the ideas of some exceptionally creative minds by helping them to achieve work they wanted but needed a particular skill-set they lacked. This trained me to evaluate and anticipate, not only the end result, but to fine tune the process involved in facilitating their vision.

I am intrigued by people; drawn to them and to their back-stories. There is nothing greater or more powerful than connecting with other people and experiencing their cultures to inspire you. All you have to do is open your eyes. My mediums are oil paint, acrylic, gouache, watercolor and pastels. I hope I never stop learning about new mediums and materials to push the boundaries of my own abilities.

In high school I designed and created the sets for the drama department for my elective credit. From that experience I became the preeminent decorative painter in my area of Los Angeles, California. It led me to wonderful projects and experiences for about 25 years. From ladders to scissor lifts, hands-on design and construction, I was one busy lady. (2008 put an end to that. My father's failing health meant that I was on-call for him and could no longer commit to any projects.)
